Lifeguard Certification
The Blue Mountain Recreation Commission will be offering a American Red Cross Lifeguard certification course:
Learn how to effectively prevent and respond to water emergencies with American Red Cross lifeguard training, the most respected source for this training and certification. With our lifeguard training courses, you will learn how effective preparation and quick response times are vital to being a lifeguard while also understanding the crucial elements in helping to prevent drownings and injuries. All Lifeguarding Courses are taught by fully certified American Red Cross Instructors  following American Red Cross Standards and Guidelines.

Recertification Class:  
To participate in the Lifeguard Review class you must have a current lifeguard certification, or certification expired by no more than 30 days. If you are signing up for the recertification class, you will have an online portion to complete. Then you will be required to attend Friday and Saturday. 

Lifeguarding Courses and Prerequisites:
The American Red Cross lifeguard training and certification program is the first step to get hired as a certified Red Cross lifeguard. Our detailed training includes both testing of hands-on skills as well as a written test. In this course, you will learn about the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard and how to carry them out.  You will also learn a number of lifeguarding techniques such as how to tow or carry a victim to safety, how to manage a suspected spinal injury in the water, and how to use rescue equipment to help rescue a distressed or drowning victim.  You will learn the above material and much more through many videos, practice sessions, reading assignments, and examinations.Upon successful completion of the Lifeguarding course, you will receive a Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification, which is valid for two years and is accepted nationwide.

When you register for the course please do so with the participants email address. If registering multiple participants you must use different email addresses. 

Prerequisites for lifeguard training include:

Age: Students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class.This will be verified by a State ID, Driver's License, or Birth Certificate. If using a Birth Certificate, you must bring a second photo ID. 

- You must complete the following sequence:
- Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to
the surface and swim 150 yards (6 laps total).
- After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the
water without support for 2 minutes by treading.
- While treading, you can only use your legs.
- Place your hands under your armpits.
- Your head must remain above the surface of the water.
- After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2
minutes, swim 50 more yards (2 additional laps).
- While swimming, you must swim continuously, keeping your face in
the water and demonstrating good breath control.
- You may use the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
- Swim goggles are allowed.

Timed Event
Arrange the swim distance of 20 yards and place a 10-pound object at a
minimum depth of 7 to 10 feet.
- Goggles are not allowed for the timed event.
- You have 1 minute, 40 seconds to complete the following sequence.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of
the water.
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to
retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return
to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both
hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming
the distance underwater is not permitted.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps

This is a Blended Learning course (In Person and Online Material)
        -10 hours of this course is online
        -20 hours of this course is in-person (Blue Mountain Middle School Pool)   
        -You must attend ALL class dates and complete online course work to pass this class!
